Perception is the lens people see you through. Here are three steps to developing a stronger perception of yourself in the organization:
• Understanding how you’re perceived
• Advocating for yourself
• Increasing your visibility.
People have a limited view of us that may not be fully accurate. Each person sees one slice of the full picture; after all, you’re the only one who’s with yourself all day, every day. That’s why you need to actively work to shape other’s perceptions of you. The idea that perception is reality means you can create your own reality with this strategy.
All of your behaviors have an impact on people’s perceptions of you. What you say (or don’t say) in meetings, on conference calls, in emails, and on project teams all forms people’s opinions of you. How aware are you of how you conduct yourself and the effect it’s having on others? You might mean to create one perception, but in reality, you’re creating an entirely different one because self-awareness is difficult to master. Assess how you present yourself and get feedback from others to help you understand what you need to focus on.
You want people to see you as a talented member of your organization who has a strong impact. That means becoming an advocate for yourself. You might be good at advocating for others, or even cultivating advocates who can promote you to others, but are you good at advocating for yourself? That’s a vital piece of the puzzle, so practice speaking up about your accomplishments, knowledge, and strengths.
Finally, ask yourself how well-known you are to your coworkers. Boosting your visibility means forming and strengthening relationships across the workplace. Talk with them on a regular basis, making a special effort to reach out to folks who don’t know you as well yet. Find reasons to seek them out and chat, whether about work or just to engage in conversation.
