ATLANTA -- Braves left-hander Sean Newcombexited under his own power after being hit in the head with a J.T. Realmuto line drive during the third inning of Saturday night’s game against the Phillies at SunTrust Park.
Newcomb was hit in the back of the head as he turned and attempted to avoid Realmuto’s 102-mph liner, which ricocheted into the stands behind the third-base dugout.
The Braves’ left-hander told teammates he was fine, but he was quickly taken to the clubhouse for further evaluation. Realmuto showed genuine concern as he covered his mouth with his hands while running toward first base with a ground-rule double.
Newcomb was making his first start since returning from Triple-A to serve as a reliever on May 6.
