German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated her support for the 'two-state solution' during a joint press statement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Berlin, on Thursday, noting the substantial difficulties in reaching it.

"In our estimation, [peace] can only be achieved through the two-state solution, taking into consideration the international agreements. This is the goal but it is a goal which is increasingly hard to achieve" Merkel said.

Abbas praised Germany’s effort in maintaining peace and security in the Middle East and added that they "will discuss the latest developments and share the obstructions that the Israeli government is putting in place to prevent the two-state solution."

The two leaders will discuss bilateral and regional issues during talks after the press statements.
