The mass shooting in El Paso, Texas on Saturday, carried out by an alleged white nationalist who killed 20 people, again drew attention to President Donald Trump’s use of racially divisive language about immigrants and minorities as part of a risky strategy to win re-election in 2020. VOA’s Brian Padden reports that Trump’s racially charged rhetoric may help bolster white working class support, but it could also alienate some moderates who voted for him in 2016.
