Chasing the Hawks: A Young Hawk Hunts Near the Nursery

Chasing the Hawks: A Young Hawk Hunts Near the Nursery Another Silly Video by Susan Kirby. A first-year red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensi) visited the northern part of Central Park in early October and proved to be a pretty good hunter. On October 5, the youngster caught a rat near the nursery just south of the compost heap, flew to a nearby tree, then ate it .
There is some graphic hawk dining in this video, so if you want to avoid that part, skip to 2:40, when a very curious squirrel approaches the young hawk on a branch, and tries to figure out what the hawk is. Both animals survive the encounter, and it is fun to watch both the hawk's and the squirrel's quizzical looks.
The young hawk was also seen on October 12 and 13, and sat on branches those two days.
