SpaceX’s first full-scale Starship prototype has suffered the significant failure during testing, destroying or severely damaging large sections of the rocket during a cryogenic loading test at the company’s launch facility in South Texas.
The winged rocket appeared to blow its upper bulkhead while undergoing testing at SpaceX’s Boca Chica Facility on the South Texas coast around 4:30 p.m. EST Wednesday, November 20th.
However, SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk has already commented on the anomaly and is not all that concerned.
A cloud of cryogenic fluid, oxygen erupted from the top of the vehicle, and video captured by nearby spectators appeared a peaceful scene was interrupted by the rapid failure of SpaceX Starship Mk1’s upper LIQUID OXYGEN tank dome, instantly thrown several hundred feet into the air before falling to the ground near the Starship test stand.
Seconds later, the crumpled upper half of SpaceX Starship Mk1’s tank section appeared out of the clouds created and began hemorrhaging a huge volume of liquid oxygen, immediately boiling and vaporizing as it was exposed to the Earth’s comparatively white-hot atmosphere.
The SpaceX Starship vehicle remained largely intact after the accident, but some buckling was visible in its stainless steel skin.
In this video Engineering Today will discuss SpaceX’s Starship prototype rocket which partially bursts during testing in Texas. The next step will be to move to a newer design.
Let’s get into details.
