GRADE 5+: How to explain why they begin doing 'Pop-Up Breathing'

GRADE 5+: How to explain why they begin doing 'Pop-Up Breathing' Students like Rhys, who have developed complete confidence in his ability to swim, bob, and simply "BE" in the water... have the confidence of Grade 6 students. They have developed reached the "completely confident" FLYING FISH status. They are also very competent... but no necessarily "completely competent." We award the SUPER FISH ribbon to students who can "swim the distance" with complete independence... who understand the need and structure... to swim the distance. Those students can begin learning the Grade 6 drills for Freestyle. Yes, Rhys is an incredible little swimmer and can be considered a "Pool Prodigy", but he is not an ideal fit for Grade 6 students from about 2 1/2 and older.
AND... since he hasn't actually "swum the distance, by himself"... (not because he can't, but because he doesn't seem ambitious enough to do it)... then it is best to call him a GRADE 5+ student. To be a GRADE 6, they must be "COMPLETELY COMPETENT and COMPETENT". Rhys is "COMPETENT and COMPLETELY CONFIDENT."

This video shows how to explain to parents about the phenomena of kids with abilities and confidence like Rhys begin to do "POP-UP BREATHING". Knowing that this is typical, it is good to worn parents that this is likely to occur at some point, when they reach the confidence level of students like Rhys. BTW: If they wanted to go fast... they would figure out that roll-over breathing is better... but at this age, swimmers like Rhys are not interested in fast.. or in racing..
