West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led thousands of people through the streets of Kolkata on Monday, to protest the recent Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and the National Register of Citizens of India (NRC).

Waving the Indian flag and carrying posters and banners decrying the controversial law, protesters marched from Dr. Ambedkar Statue, in the center of Kolkata, to Jorasanko, followed by a heavy police presence. After a speech rallying the crowd, Banerjee began the march.

"Our State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured us that in West Bengal she will not implement the NRC [National Register of Citizens] or CAB [Citizenship Amendment Bill]. This law is unconstitutional, which we don't believe in and will not accept," said a protester.

"The Citizenship Amendment Bill should not be applied here," stated another protester, adding that "the Constitution does not say to avoid any particular community and make laws only for every other community. If a law is made, then must it be for everyone or no one."

Large demonstrations are taking place in the country since last Thursday, over a new citizenship bill entitling Indian citizenship only to non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

According to reports, similar marches are planned until Wednesday.
