How To Come Up With New Melodic Licks

In this video, we are going to learn how to come up with awesome melodic ideas.

First, we need to put our guitar down. Following this step is really important because it prevents us from thinking like a guitar player. Guitar players are always thinking about scales, licks, techniques, etc. To be melodic we need to think differently.

With the guitar out of the way, we are going to start singing in the most dramatic way possible. It helps if you close your eyes and listen for what the backing track is telling you. Come up with a story, this will engage your imagination. Use real words, this makes the idea more memorable.

If you think about the most iconic guitar solos in history, you will be able to sing them. That is because of the use of melodic themes.

At this point, we are ready to take the guitar back and start playing our melodies. One element is missing, though. We need to add drama. It's crucial to exaggerate the message through vibrato, bends, slides, etc. Use those tools to emphasize your story.
