Just About Sailing November 2019 - Chinese Diesel Heater, Any good for condensation? Pt 1 Theory

Just About Sailing November 2019 - Chinese Diesel Heater, Any good for condensation? Pt 1 Theory This is a long one with lots of talking and lots of theory.

Read the following description to see if you really want to know this stuff. And if you do already know it then you probably won't get much from this video, so go straight on to part 2.

I want to do two tests on the heater to see where it is best to have the 'heated air' inlet - air coming from outside the boat, or inside the cabin and 'recirculated'.

My aim to to get the inside environment in Serenity as comfortable as possible with no condensation problems. The actual test is in part 2 which will be the next video.

But before doing the experimental test I wanted to do a video to get everyone up to speed on the physics behind Relative Humidity, Absolute Humidity, Dew Point, Temperature and Condensation. The relationship between these is key to whether or not condensation becomes a problem or not.

This is a big topic that a lot of people shy away from. I have tried to make it as comprehensive but simple as possible (with no math(s)), but without being too superficial.

This stuff is important because, as we all know, "You can't change the laws of physics". Condensation is very predictable, but only if you know the "laws".

Here are the key parts if you don't want to watch all of it at once.

0:00 Overview
3:05 Relationship between Absolute Humidity, Relative Humidity, & Temperature. How to work out Dew Point using a graph.
19:50 Principles of how insulation can prevent condensation
25:30 Worked examples showing how an increase in Relative Humidity can drastically make condensation problems worse.
